Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Two of her earliest television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. However, her parents did not allow her to act until she was an adult due to the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry, who was too shy for acting in school, began performing in the theater at Northwestern University because she wanted to meet new people. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, getting small role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California to work as a theater actress. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry starred in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal that starred her dad. In the same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother as a young version. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
